"We sing with the Angels!"

Sermon Audio

Today “We sing with the Angels” in celebration of Jesus Christ’s coming down to earth!  In the fields outside Bethlehem, the angels proclaimed, “Glory to God in the Highest and peace on earth”!  The greeting the angels heralded was the fulfillment of the prophecies of the Old Testament. It is clear from that day forward when the shepherds story was shared, the angels chorus would change people’s hearts, because this was the fulfillment of the Gospel of Jesus Christ where in songs of the celebration, “We sing with the Angels”!

We began this morning singing “Angels, From the Realms of Glory”.  James Montgomery points to the belief and truth we ‘Come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn king’!  The Angels proclaimed to the Shepherds the Messiah’s birth and we gather here this morning celebrating the Word made flesh Who dwells among us.  We celebrate Jesus Christ, Mary’s Son, Who comes to offer us salvation and Himself in order for us to receive Him, not only in the Words we hear, the Sacrament we receive, but especially as we proclaim with heart, head and voice as “We sing with the Angels”!

Our hymn of praise this morning “Good Christian Friends, Rejoice” we offer ‘with heart and soul and voice’ and herald the Messiah’s birth.  For just as the angels proclaimed to the shepherds, Jesus ‘opened heaven’s door, and we are blest forevermore’. It is Jesus birth that gives us the reason to sing of salvation for all mankind.  Not for a few people, Jesus gift is for all of mankind in order that our voices can be blended into the choir of mortals and angels that proclaims clearly that ‘Christ was born to save’. This is the gift God offers us and that inspires us as “We sing with the Angels”!

Yet, why should “We sing with the Angels” on this Christmas Day?  The reason “We sing with the Angels” is because of the free gift of grace we receive by and from Jesus Christ.  As Isaac Watts wrote and we sing today, ‘Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive its King’!  The King we receive and celebrate this morning is Jesus Christ and His coming among we His people and today in our sight we lay claim to this by the Christ Candle’s movement from the right hand of the altar to among we the people of God.  It is Jesus Christ’s birth that reminds us of why we should sing. “We sing with the Angels” in order that others can learn of the gift of grace and salvation Jesus brings.  So we can sing that Jesus ‘rules the world with truth and grace’ and the offer of salvation is for all of mankind.  This is why Jesus came in a lowly manger, why we proclaim the ‘wonders of his love’ and why this Christmas morning we proclaim Messiah’s birth as “We sing with the Angels”!  AMEN!
